What is a Zcash block halving event?

A Zcash block halving is an event that happens roughly every 4 years.

It lowers the rate at which Zcash is generated and is programmed into Zcash's code.

Zcash's initial block reward was 12.5 ZEC, the current block reward is 1.5625 ZEC and the new block reward will be 0.78125 ZEC. 

The previous Zcash halving date was on the 23rd of November 2024 and this will be the 3rd halving of Zcash, not counting the Blossom upgrade which reduced the block reward from 12.5 ZEC to 6.25 ZEC.

Why was this done?
