AMD Ryzen - powerful mining CPUs

Dear users,

AMD just recently released their Ryzen CPUs. There are plenty of various tests and benchmarks already available on the web, but we wanted to see how well this CPU does on cryptocurrency mining. Well, it turns out that the Ryzen CPUs are actually quite powerful for mining.

AMD Ryzen

Ryzen is an AMD brand for microprocessors. The brand was introduced in 2017 with products implementing their Zen microarchitecture. Ryzen CPUs are utilizing 14nm process which promises low power usage while still achieving top performance. We decided to test the AMD Ryzen 1700X CPU. This CPU is in the group of top AMD Ryzen CPUs with unlocked over-clocking possibilities. There are at least three things that makes AMD Ryzen 1700X a good mining CPU candidate:

  • 14nm process (low power consumption)
  • newly engineered multi-core design with 8 cores
  • powerful memory controller with 16MB of L3 cache

We built our testing system on the "ASUS PRIME X370-PRO" motherboard. Together with "AMD Ryzen 1700X CPU" (95W TDP) we also used dual-channel "G.Skill Trident Z DDR4-3600 RAM" (configured @2400 Mhz, higher speeds are not stable - the Ryzen architecture is known to having issues with high RAM memory speeds with current generation of motherboards) and "M.2 128GB Intel 600p" storage for Windows 10 install. Our primary focus was the CryptoNight algorithm since this is the most mature CPU mineable algorithm with optimized CPU mining software. The results are very good. AMD Ryzen 1700X can do 510+ H/s on default stock clocks and as much as 610+ H/s while being over-clocked to very stable 4.0 GHz. This is almost twice the speed of Intel Core i7 7700K.

We also tested some other algorithms like Lyre2RE and we also observed speeds significantly higher than competing Intel CPUs. Obviously the newly engineered multi-core design together with 16MB of L3 cache gives enough room for memory-hard algorithms and plays really well on AMD Ryzen CPUs.

The "AMD Ryzen 1700X CPU" is now already listed in our Profitability calculator and is fully supported with the latest version of NiceHash Miner. Thank you for your using our service and keep on hashing! ;)
