PSA: 4 GB cards will soon stop working on Ravencoin (KawPow)

Ravencoin 4gb stopped working

The DAG size on Ravencoin is approaching 4 GB size. This means that 4 GB GPUs will not have enough free VRAM to save the DAG file and, thus, will not be able to mine Ravencoin (KawPow algorithm).

At the time of writing, the Ravencoin's DAG size is 3.5 GB.

Ravencoin's DAG size is still lower than 4 GB, why can't I use 4 GB cards for mining?

Although the GPU has 4 GB of total VRAM and Ravencoin's DAG size is lower than 4 GB, some users might already experience difficulties using 4 GB cards when mining Ravencoin/KawPow algorithm.

The reason for this lies in the fact that the Windows OS can use some VRAM for operating, or another software is running - a video game for example. Windows can use 100 MB or even 500 MB of the GPU's VRAM. This means that there is only about 3.9 GB or 3.5 GB of free VRAM available for storing the DAG file.

What are the alternatives? What can I do to continue mining with 4 GB cards?

If you are among the unlucky ones that cannot mine Ravencoin/KawPow anymore, we suggest using NiceHash Miner and disabling all KawPow algorithms in the Benchmark tab. In the future, once 4 GB cards definetly stop working, we will remove the KawPow algorithm for 4 GB cards in NiceHash Miner.

Alternatively, you can use NHOS in the meantime - Linux based OS'es use a very small fraction of VRAM to operate. By using a Linux based OS, you will be able to mine Ravencoin/KawPow a bit longer, but eventually the DAG size will be to big for all 4 GB cards.
