Best mining motherboard in late 2020

If you are thinking about building a new mining rig and you are not sure which motherboard to pick, you are in the right place. In this blog post, we will take a look at what are the best motherboards for building a mining rig in late 2020.

When looking for a mining motherboard there are a couple of key values that you should look for:

  • Amount of PCIe slot connectors
  • CPU compatibility
  • Price

PCIe connectors

Most likely you will be building a mining rig with at least 6 GPUs, that is why you need a motherboard with 6 PCIe connectors. PCIe connectors are where you connect your USB risers, which allow you to elevate the GPUs above the motherboard.

CPU compatibility

Nowadays finding a cheap older generation CPU like Celeron 3900 is quite hard. You will find very cheap 7th and 6th generation mining motherboards like Gigabytes H110-D3A, but you might have issues finding a compatible CPU. That is why getting an 8th or 9th generation motherboard could be cheaper than getting a 6th or 7th generation motherboard with an i3 or i5 processor.

6th and 7th Generation

These motherboards support Intel Celeron G3900-G3950 or Pentium G4400-G4620 and all the i3/i5/i7 6xxx/7xxx series. This poses an issue when the supply of these CPUs is limited and many stores do not have them available anymore.

ASUS B250 Mining Expert
  • 19 PCIe slots
  • 6th and 7th Generation support
  • Around €150 at the time of writing

This motherboard was specially made for mining. It also provides a Unique Mining Mode inside BIOS and triple PSU power connectors. When booting, it shows which PCIe slots are working correctly and which ones are not.

ASRock H110 PRO BTC+

  • 13 PCIe slots
  • 6th and 7th Generation support
  • Around €70 at the time of writing

Simply a great motherboard for its value!

Gigabyte H110-D3A

  • 6 PCIe slots
  • 6th and 7th Generation support
  • Around €50 at the time of writing

An iconic motherboard by now. This was one of the first motherboards that were used for mining rigs and is still a great motherboard!

8th and 9th Generation

These motherboards support Intel Celeron G4900-G4950 or Pentium G5400-G5620 and all the i3/i5/i7 8xxx/9xxx series. These motherboards are a bit cheaper than previous chipsets, but finding a supported CPU will be a lot easier.

ASUS H370 Mining Master
  • 20 PCIe slots
  • 8th and 9th Generation support
  • Around €170 at the time of writing

This is the B250 Mining Experts' big brother. With up to 20 GPUs and direct USB connections instead of PCIe

MSI B360-A PRO

  • 6 PCIe slots
  • 8th and 9th Generation support
  • Around €85 at the time of writing
This is not strictly a mining motherboard but it can sure act like one! It has 6 PCIe slots for €85 and it can be used as a gaming motherboard, which increases its resell value in the future.
